How to Choose Fonts for Your Website

Calligraphy fonts are pretty popular these days. But they’re also hard to choose. Most are very hard to read. They might be nice for one simple word on a T-shirt, but not for your website logo or pin-worthy images. So, when choosing calligraphy fonts, there are a few things to consider.

  • Legibility
  • Weight
  • Emotional Effect

Legibility

Your website is an extension of your business–or sometimes your entire business! How helpful is it for you to have a beautiful site that no one can read?

It’s not.

Trust me, guys. The sad truth is that in today’s world, people are busy. They are searching the web for an answer to their problem, and they aren’t going to stop to sound out words. They’ll simply move on until they find a site that gives them immediate help.

So, when picking calligraphy fonts for your website, you need to make sure they are legible. One way to do this is to have someone else write something in your chosen font–a phrase or sentence you aren’t expecting–and then see if you can read it at first glance. Can you? Then the font is probably legible. If you can’t, then I’m sorry–I’m glad it’s a beautiful font, but it shouldn’t go on your website.

Another way to tell is by putting it on your site and then checking it on your phone. A lot of people use their phones these days to find answers to their questions. Some fonts look great on your huge computer screen but are really tiny and spaced weird on your phone. So check both devices. It might make a huge difference!

All in all, getting customers and/or helping people are your goals, and if they can’t read what you have to offer, then no one wins. So, if you’re using any calligraphy fonts, choose ones that are legible.

Weight

This goes along with the phone screen test. If the weight (thickness) of your font is too thin, no one will be able to read it from a distance.

Most importantly, I believe weight very much affects your Pinterest engagement. Think about it. If people are scrolling Pinterest on their phones, the images are super small. You need to make sure your font is thick enough for people to easily read at a distance.

Emotional Effect

Think about what your site has to offer. Is it dramatic and full of flare? Soft and woven with grace? Frilly and feminine? Professional and clean? Each of these emotional effects and more are a part of your blog’s personal brand, so you want to keep them in mind when you choose calligraphy fonts. They need to reflect your business’s overall feel.

Now, I know it’s tempting to want to use a font just because it’s super pretty. And its weight and legibility might even pass the test! But if it’s wrong for the feel of your business, then guess what? It’s wrong for the feel of your business. Save the fonts for future projects or client work if you love them so much, but only use calligraphy fonts on your site that will contribute to your brand.
